Hello from the Collection!

The Historic Clothing Collection at Smith College was established in 1978 by a student who pulled articles of clothing from theatre stock too delicate to be worn on stage, and too significant to be thrown away. The collection is based around the idea that the study of clothing provides important insights into the past. Many other collections housed by museums include only the most remarkable pieces in their acquisitions, but our focus is on the lives of regular women whose lives were (and still are) so rarely given value in the scope of our history.

Here we will be posting regular updates regarding the activities of the collection, as well as research and conservation work done by both faculty and current Smith students.
