Made sometime between 1915 and 1922, this coat shows signs of a changing attitude towards fashion. Just look at how the high neckline and cape coexist with the jaunty waistline, which is already inching lower than the Victorian silhouette! As the end of the decade approaches, how will you step up your styles for the '20s? Will you overhaul your wardrobe? Or do you have a favorite style or piece you simply can't part with? Let us know in the comments! #coat #historicalfashion #fashion #roaring20s #roaringtwenties #blackandwhite #victorian #newwoman #fashioninspo
Some presenters and the pieces they researched at tonight’s Pop-Up Exhibit, “Up Close and Personal.” Thank you to everyone who came! Featuring a Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress (and it’s original wearer and donor), a 1915 ensemble, a Quinceanera dress worn by a Smith Prof. when she was 15, and the crispest white suit from the 1890’s.
Come to see Up Close and Personal, a pop-up exhibit of pieces from the collection that have been researched by the students of “Reading” Dress: Archival Studies of Clothing! • From 7-9pm tomorrow, December 9th in Hallie Flanagan Studio Theater!
This nifty ensemble was designed by Mary Quant, an English fashion icon whose miniskirts and Mod aesthetic defined the youth culture of 1960s London. Would any of you brave the snow with that chic scarf? Let us know in the comments! #maryquant #mod #swingingsixties #miniskirt #scarf #historicalfashion #fashion #fashionhistory #youthquake
This day dress from around 1895 is an example of the Mother Hubbard style, which flourished in the 19th century. This type of dress has a complicated history with women around the world; for European and American women, it served as an alternative to the constricting styles of the Victorian age that could be easily made by middle- and lower-class women and worn through adolescence, pregnancy, and old age. But the loose style was also transmitted across the world in the colonization of regions such as Hawaii, where the donning of clothing modeled on European and Christian cultures were presented as proof of successful assimilation or submission to invading forces. Still, the influence of styles like the Mother Hubbard can be traced through many modern variations on folk dress, as in the case of the Hawaiian muumuu. #motherhubbard #historicalfashion #historicalcostume #fashionhistory #victorian #green #dress #hawaii #fashion
When you see a pillbox hat like this donation, dated to the 1950s, you might think of Jackie Kennedy or modern English royalty. But did you know that the shape of the pillbox hat can be traced back whole centuries? The flat, brimless shape first showed up around the world as a military headgear style hundreds of years ago! Would you rather rock this style on the battlefield or on a diplomatic visit? Let us know in the comments! #vintage #historicaldress #pillboxhat #gold #mink #hat #jackiekennedy #jackieo #fashion #military
